The stage is set for Robin “The Ilonggo” Catalan’s return to the ONE Championship Circle, and the hard-hitting Filipino is more than ready for the occasion.
Just like in his last promotional appearance, Catalan looks to play the spoiler to another hometown hero.
This time, he faces Thailand’s Pongsiri “The Smiling Assassin” Mitsatit on the main card of ONE: WARRIORS OF LIGHT, which takes place at the Impact Arena in Bangkok on Friday, 10 May.
Less than two days away from showcasing his skills on the global stage for martial arts, the 28-year-old is confident he has done enough to continue his winning ways.
“I am ready now. It’s all about putting the instructions of my coaches to heart,” he said.
“I have studied Mitsatit quite well. I know he’s young and he’s good, but I am ready to claim my second win of the year.
“Not to be arrogant or anything, but I feel like a different athlete – particularly with my determination and confidence to get the win.”
What excites Catalan the most is that he is given a chance to fly the Philippine flag high once again.
More so than the accolades and the adoration he receives from his supporters, what keeps him going is the chance to represent the country in this sport.
Catalan has represented the nation well in the past, as he claimed numerous World Championships in wushu and Muay Thai competitions abroad.
Now, like his brother Rene, he is looking to bring more glory to the country in professional mixed martial arts.
“Every opportunity that comes my way is important, and I am proud because, through martial arts, I am given a chance to represent the country,” Catalan said.
“It’s a different feeling, to be given a chance to represent the Philippines in martial arts.”
