CEBU CITY – An elderly couple was killed in a fire in Barangay Carreta here last Saturday.
The victims were identified as Nicasio Orcullo, 62, and Proserfina Orcullo, 57.
The Orcullos were killed after they were trapped in their burning house.
At least 50 houses were destroyed in the fire, said Fire Chief Insp. Noel Ababon, head of the Cebu City Fire Department.
Damage to properties in the fire was pegged at P900,000. The blaze started at 4:18 a.m. and was contained at 5:15 a.m.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, said Ababon.
The fire started at the house of live-in partners Edna Basillote and Jason Herciso. The couple was brought to the police station for safekeeping after some residents tried to assault them.
Edna is the sister of Eddie Basillote who was arrested by police in a drug buy-bust last Maundy Thursday.
The arrest became controversial after a security camera footage circulated online showing Eddie being mauled by operatives of the Talamban police station.
Charges have been filed against the policemen in the alleged police brutality. (Calvin D. Cordova)
