GOSPEL: JN 16:29-33
THE disciples said to Jesus, “Now you are talking plainly, and not in any figure of speech. Now we realize that you know everything and that you do not need to have anyone question you. Because of this we believe that you came from God.” Jesus answered them, “Do you believe now? Behold, the hour is coming and has arrived when each of you will be scattered to his own home and you will leave me alone. But I am not alone, because the Father is with me. I have told you this so that you might have peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world.”

Jesus knows that his days on earth are numbered. He does not cower in fear but assures his disciples that in the face of impending trials and future sufferings, he will emerge victorious. Jesus tells them to remain optimistic, courageous, and confident.
The disciples are grateful that Jesus has stopped talking to them in riddles and has disclosed to them his true identity as Son of God. In a matter of hours Jesus will be arrested and hailed to court. These events will bring Jesus to the “hour” that he predicted. It will be a painful time because the disciples to whom Jesus has disclosed himself will abandon him and will be scattered in fear. Although their presence and help are important to him, Jesus will not bear feelings of resentment against the disciples for their desertion. Jesus knows that his ultimate help will come from his heavenly Father who is always with him.
Who are the people you can rely upon in times of trouble? Do you, like Jesus, consider your heavenly Father as your greatest protector?
