Around 1,500 taekwondo newcomers get a chance to show their progress when they compete in the 2019 MERALCO/MVP Sports Foundation National New Face of the Year Taekwondo Championships on June 8-9 at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall.
Participants will come from all Philippine Taekwondo Association chapters and branches nationwide, particularly Metro Manila and the military service.
Competition will be conducted in eight categories, namely, senior men and women, junior men and women, Cadet men and women and gradeschool boys and girls.
The New Face of the Year competition is one of the events that help make the Philippines one of the tough contenders in important international tournaments, like the World Championships, the Southeast Asian Games and the Asian Championships among others. It also helps support the government’s grass root program.
The Filipinos’ skills in the popular martial art were clearly seen in the recent ASEAN championships here which the Philippines dominated.
This weekend’s event is supported by SMART Communications Inc., Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee and PLDT.
Parents interested to enroll their children in taekwondo and other sports enthusiasts are cordially invited to watch the tournament, which starts at 9 a.m.
