HOW do you respond to stress and misfortune? Can you adapt and respond positively? People who don’t learn to adapt and bounce back fall apart. It’s the resilient ones who survive. Vishwas Chavan, an author, says, “Only those who are able to adapt to changing scenarios will continue to survive and prosper. Success is directly proportional to the degree of positive adaptation to change”.
The American Psychological Association defines resilience as “the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or significant sources of stress – such as family and relationship problems, serious health problems or workplace and financial stressors”.
How can you protect yourself from these things? How can you develop resilience? The US Department of Health and Human Services explains, “People develop resilience by learning better skills and strategies for managing stress and better ways of thinking about life’s challenges. To be resilient one must tap into personal strengths and the support of family, friends, neighbors, and/or faith communities”.
Never magnify your problems. Never label them as overwhelming and insurmountable. Not everything is okay all the time. Stressors are among the constant things in our lives, so it is very important to learn how to adapt. It’s either we bounce back or we fall apart.
