ZAMBOANGA CITY – At least 11 Grade 9 students were injured when a newly built P4-million covered court at the Sinubong National High School in Barangay Sinubong here collapsed following days of intermittent rains yesterday morning.
Police Regional Office for Zamboanga Peninsula director Police Brig. Gen. Froilan F. Quidilla said the incident happened at about 8:30 a.m.
Nine victims – Mikyla Martinez, 14; Jenelyn Ebag, 15; Shaina dela Cerna, 19; Reyselin Cruz, 16; Jubilee Soler, 15; Rica May Busmeon, 15; Mica Macaso, 16; Joy Mae Impen, 15; and Radzmea Jainal, 15 – were taken to the Labuan Public Hospital here.
Section adviser Sherley Fonollera told police they were holding classes when the newly completed covered court suddenly collapsed. “Katatapos lang natapos na covered court tapos nahati ang bubong saka bumagsak sa amin,” Fonollera said.
Fonollera added 11 out of the 49 Grade 9 students who were having classes were injured and nine were brought to the Labuan Public Hospital.
“Tumutulo dahil sa ulan ang room ng bagong building namin kaya lumipat kami sa covered court. Paglakas ng ulan nahati ang bubong sa covered court at bumagsak,” she said.
The covered court was turned over to the city government here last year. (Nonoy Lacson)
