Powerhouse Far Eastern University is fielding at least 30 players in the first Tempo Inter-Schools rapid chess championships presented by Manila Prince Hotel on July 20.
FEU head coach Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales said they will compete in the six-division FIDE-rated tournament sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).
FEU topped the men’s and junior divisions in the last University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP).
The one-day, seven-round event will be held at the grand ballroom of the Manila Prince, a 300-room business hotel located at the corner of United Nations Avenue and San Marcelino Street in Manila.
Sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and supported by the Philippine Basketball Association and SM Supermalls, the event is open to all college, high school and elementary students.
Each category features Open and women’s contests, bringing to six the number of individual titles at stake.
The top scorer after the seven-round Swiss System event will be declared champion. Time control is 15 minutes with 10 seconds increment.
The team champion, on the other hand, will be determined by the top scorer of each school in six categories.
Online registration is under way and will end at noon on July 10.
