More than 700 Metro Manila policemen have been dismissed from the service since President Duterte assumed the presidency as part of the internal cleansing in the police organization.
National Capital Region Police Office chief Police Major Gen. Guillermo Eleazar said those kicked out from the service are part of the 2,279 Metro Manila policemen who were punished for various offenses.
Of the 711 policemen dismissed, Eleazar said 377 of them are for being AWOL (Absent Without Official Leave), 236 are for various grave offenses like involvement in criminal activities, 39 are for robbery and extortion cases, and 24 for involvement in the illegal drugs trade.
Thirty of the dismissed policemen were kicked out due to human rights violations. Five others are for physical injuries cases.
“This is a proof that we are serious in our internal cleansing, that we do not tolerate misdeeds in our organization,” said Albayalde.
Eleazar said that 1,378 were suspended while 190 were demoted.
But Eleazar said there could be more erring cops.
“This is the reason why we are asking the public to help us. Report to us the illegal activities of our men and we will take care of their complaints,” said Eleazar. (Aaron Recuenco)
