Cash prizes totaling P100,000 will be at stake in the first Tempo Inter-Schools rapid chess championships presented by Manila Prince Hotel on July 20.
The top three finishers in the collegiate Open and women’s divisions will receive P7,000, P5,000 and P3,000 in that order while the Top 3 in the high school and elementary divisions will get P5,000, P3,000 and P2,000, respectively.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the top 10 finishers in all six divisions, according to tournament director Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales.
The one-day, seven-round event will be held at the grand ballroom of the Manila Prince, a 300-room business hotel located at the corner of United Nations Avenue and San Marcelino Street in Manila.
Sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and supported by the Philippine Basketball Association, SM Supermalls and Mighty Sports Apparel and Accessories, the event is open to all college, high school and elementary students.
Each category features Open and women’s contests, bringing to six the number of individual titles at stake.
The top scorer after the seven-round Swiss System event will be declared champion. Time control is 15 minutes with 10 seconds increment.
The team champion, on the other hand, will be determined by the top scorer of each school in six categories.
Online registration is under way and will end at noon on July 10.
