BACOLOD CITY – A former coordinator of Karapatan in Negros Oriental was gunned down by two unidentified men on a motorcycle at Brgy. Poblacion, Manjuyod town Sunday, July 7.
Slain was Salvador Romano, 43, of Brgy. Tupas.
Investigation showed that Romano was riding a motorcycle when the assailants fired at him using a .45 caliber, and fled.
He sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was brought to Bais City District Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Recovered from the scene were a deformed slug and four fired bullets of . 45 caliber.
Meanwhile, Karapatan-Central Visayas condemned the killing of Romano, whom they claimed was an active church member of Iglesia Filipina Independiente (IFI) and adviser of the Youth IFI.
In a Facebook post, Karapatan Central Visayas berated the continued attacks against human rights defenders and the helplessness of human rights documenters amid intensified militarization and para-militarization in rural poor communities.
“We decry in the highest degree the current administration’s bloody violent technologies of regulation in order to manufacture social consent on its constituency,” the group said.
The group called for justice for Romano’s death and for all the victims of human rights violation. (Glazyl Masculino)
