The first Tempo Inter-schools rapid chess championships presented by Manila Prince Hotel will introduce a novel format that lumps together college, high school and elementary students in determining the team champion.

“This will be the first time,” said tournament director Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales who came up with the format in collaboration with GM Eugene Torre.

“Ngayon lang mangyayari na magkakasama ang college, high school at elementary students sa isang team,” said Gonzales.

The one-day event features Open and women’s competitions in all three school levels.

The school’s top scorer in each of the six brackets will be added to determine its total score.

In another novelty, a participant doesn’t have to be a member of the varsity team to count for the team score. Schools can field as many players that they want.

Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) powerhouse Far Eastern University has committed at least 30 players, including reigning national juniors champion Jeth Romy Morado.

The FIDE-rated event will be held on July 20 at the Manila Prince Hotel, a 300-room business hotel located at the corner of Marcelino Street and United Nations Avenue.

The seven-round Swiss System tournament is sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and supported by the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), SM Supermalls, Mighty Sports Apparel and Accessories, 1-Pacman partylist and ICTSI.

The seven-round Swiss System event is open to all college, high school and elementary students.

Cash prizes, trophies and medals will be awarded to the top finishers in the six divisions. Time control is 15 minutes with 10 seconds increment.
Online registration is under way.
