San Beda University and Lyceum, two teams that battled for the title the past two years, shoot for 2-0 starts as they collide with their respective rivals in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament today at The Arena in San Juan City.
The reigning champions San Beda Red Lions tangle with the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers at 12 noon before the Lyceum Pirates cap a heavy six-game schedule for the day when they take on the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals at 4 p.m.
The four-peat seeking Red Lions started the season with a 59-46 triumph against the Arellano University Chiefs while the Pirates ambushed the Letran Knights, 84-80.
Donald Tonkoua of Cameroon starred in San Beda’s win by finishing with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Filipino-Canadian James Kwetuteye added 10 and seven rebounds.
San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez understands the excitement of the players during the season’s opener that saw them rushing to execute their plays.
“They’re just excited, but that’s understandable. The good this is we’re able to win, and now our focus is out next game,” said Fernandez.
