A police officer was gunned down Wednesday night by a lone motorcycle-riding assailant while on his way home in Malabon City.
Col. Jessie Tamayao, Malabon police chief, identified the victim as SSgt. Orland Lucky Boy de Leon, 32, a resident of Caloocan City and member of Malabon City Police Station Drug Enforcement Unit (SDEU).
SSgt. Mardelio Osting, investigator on case, said De Leon was riding his motorcycle on way home along Araneta Avenue in Barangay Potrero, Malabon, at around 6:15 p.m. when a gunman onboard a black motorcycle appeared from behind.
The suspect shot De Leon several times, killing him instantly.
Members of Malabon Police Community Precinct 2 (PCP-2), who were near the area when the incident happened, immediately responded after hearing successive gunshots, police said.
Authorities tried to chase the suspect as he fled towards Monumento, but the latter managed to escape.
Joyce, victim’s live-in partner, told police that her husband had no known enemies and was not receiving any death threat.
Osting said De Leon became a member of Malabon Police in 2018.
Probers recovered from the crime scene 15 pieces of fired cartridge case and a deformed slug.
Investigators are getting closed-circuit television (CCTV) footages around the area to identify the gunman and establish the motive behind the killing, police said. (Joseph Pedrajas)
