A total of 50,385 dengue cases, including 227 fatalities, have been recorded nationwide with majority of the deaths reported in Western Visayas, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council disclosed yesterday.
NDRRMC Executive Director Ricardo Jalad said the dengue cases and fatalities were reported to authorities from Jan. 1 to July 13, 2019.
Of the 227 fatalities, 94 were in Western Visayas: 24 in Negros Occidental; 23 in Iloilo; 15 each in Aklan and Capiz; six in Antique; five in Iloilo City; four in Bacolod City; and two in Guimaras.
The Philippine Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response data for Western Visayas reported that the number of dengue cases exceeded the epidemic threshold from Jan. 1 to June 15, 2019.
The NDRRMC also recorded new reports of dengue fatalities in Central Visayas (Region 7); Region 4-A, and Region 12.
In Central Visayas, authorities said a total of 62 dengue-related deaths were recorded in Cebu, Bohol, and Negros Oriental.
The deadly vector-borne disease also plagued Region 4-A or the Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon area which have a collective data of 50 deaths.
Twenty-one individuals have died in the municipalities of Banga, Norala, Polomolok, Sto. Nino, Surallah, Tampakan, Tantangan, T’boli, Tupi, and Koronadal City in Rerion 12 or the Socsargen (South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and General Santos City) area. (Martin Sadongdong)
