After more than five years, coach Alex Compton was forced to end his “love affair” with the Alaska Aces who are out to regain their lost glory in the PBA.
With the blessing from team owner Fred Uytengsu, the Alaska management announced Thursday that Compton will no longer be calling the shots for the Aces starting this Governors’ Cup and will be replaced by former star player Jeffrey Cariaso.
“We are very sorry to see Alex leave the team,” said Uytengsu, as he pointed to the “tremendous impact” and concern of the American coach on the players on or off the basketball court.
“We also share the winning (with integrity) an important aspect of our team and are grateful that Alex stepped aside to pave the way for someone else to lead the Aces to our next championship,” Uytengsu added.
Cariaso mentored briefly the Ginebra Kings before returning to Alaska where he served as member of coaching staff for the past four seasons.
Compton had a heart to heart talk with Uytengsu on Wednesday where the latter revealed his decision that they’re making a different direction in hopes of regaining their championship tradition.
“Yesterday at his house, a man I deeply respect Fred Uytengsu, sat down with me, looked me in the eye, and asked me to step down,” he said.
Compton added: “I accepted his direction and have agreed to resign as head coach of the Alaska Aces. It has been an honor for me to coach such a storied franchise. I have made great relationships and have a lot of love for people in the organization. Being part of the Alaska family has meant a lot to me and my family, and we will always treasure our time with the Aces.”
Compton, an American who is fluent in Filipino, took over as Alaska mentor in late May 2014 when Luigi Trillo resigned after two games in the Governors Cup. Prior to that, he was part the team’s coaching staff.
Under the leadership of Compton, the team made it to the Finals five times, but fell short in all occasions.
“Truly a blessing to be elevated into this level of leadership. I am honored for the opportunity, and genuinely humbled as I face the challenge,” said Cariaso. “Certainly, I will give my best, nothing less.” (WAYLON GALVEZ)
