Ateneo and Arellano bested their respective foes Saturday to lead their respective brackets in the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Lady Eagles swept the San Sebastian College Lady Stags, 25-17, 25-17, 25-8, while the Lady Chiefs downed the Lyceum Lady Pirates, 25-23, 12-25, 25-21, 25-21, for their respective second wins.
Faith Nisperos and Ponggay Gaston paced Ateneo in overpowering San Sebastian in all fronts, scoring 15 and 10 points, respectively, including combined 19 kills.
The Lady Eagles prevailed in just 61 minutes as they too advantage of the Lady Stags’ weak defense by hammering out 35 spikes and 11 service aces.
San Sebastian also struggled with its offense, managing only 12 excellent sets and producing 13 kills as it slipped to a second straight defeat in Pool A.
None from the Lady Stags scored more than six points with Sherielyn Bigata scoring five points.
Meanwhile, Arellano survived despite giving up 44 points on errors with Necole Ebuen in front of the assault.
Ebuen, the reigning NCAA Most Valuable Player, pumped in 22 points including 21 spikes and posted seven digs.
Dodee Batindaan also tallied nine points and Sarah Verutiao committeed 26 excellent sets for the Lady Chiefs, who dealt the Lady Pirates their second consecutive defeat.
Ciamelle Wanta and Joan Doguna merged for 25 points for Lyceum, which fell to 0-2 in Pool B. (KRISTEL SATUMBAGA)
