The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council yesterday reported P282 million in damage to infrastructure and agriculture from severe tropical storm “Ineng.”
NDRRMC Executive Director Ricardo Jalad said nine roads and slope protections, four bridges, and two flood control structures were damaged in 12 barangays in Ilocos Norte. The cost of damage to these infrastructures was pegged at P263 million.
A slope protection structure in Barangay Payac to Alao-ao which was destroyed due to soil erosion had the highest cost of damage at P150 million.
Most of the structures will have to undergo rehabilitation, including the damaged bridge on the Vintar-Tamdagan-Tungel Provincial Road in Barangay Tamdagan, Vintar and two flood control sites in Barangay Parado and Sagpatan in Dingras.
On the other hand, Jalad said P19,571,654.95 in damage to agriculture was reported in the Ilocos region.
Most affected were the rice fields in Northern Luzon which had P14,954,521.60 in damage.
Damage to fisheries was placed at P2,398,735. Others affected were livestock (P1,541,111.35), high value commercial crops (P511,537), and corn (P165,750).
The NDRRMC said two persons died due to Ineng.
They were Ricky Manglanlan, of Barangay 16, Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, who was swept away by strong floodwaters after rescuing a family in a low-lying area in their barangay, and 17-year-old Pauleen Joy Corpuz, who was trapped in their house in Barangay Sta. Catalina, Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte after it was hit by a landslide. (Martin Sadongdong and Freddie Lazaro)
