The low-pressure area east of the country developed into a tropical depression yesterday afternoon and was given a local name “Jenny.”
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration said the weather disturbance has entered the country’s area of responsibility and was estimated at 675 kilometers east-northeast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar or 790 kms east of Virac, Catanduanes before noon yesterday.
PAGASA was expected to raise tropical cyclone wind signal No. 1 over the eastern sections of Luzon and Visayas yesterday.
PAGASA weather specialist Ezra Bulquerin said the tropical cyclone will likely make landfall over Northern Luzon.
The weather bureau had earlier said the weather disturbance may make landfall over the country by Tuesday or Wednesday.
Jenny is the third tropical cyclone to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility this month and 10th this year.
Bulquerin said the combined effects of the southwest monsoon or “habagat” and the trough or advancing clouds of the tropical cyclone will bring cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Sorsogon, Masbate, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Dinagat Islands, Bukidnon, Camiguin, Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental, Lanao del Norte, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, and Visayas.
Bulquerin advised residents in areas identified to be at high risk of flooding and landslides to take extra precaution. (Ellalyn V. Ruiz)
