The Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group has deployed more than 200 personnel on EDSA to help ease traffic flow and run after undisciplined motorists.
HPG director Police Brig. Gen. Eliseo Cruz said his men will always be visible on EDSA, especially during rush hours and peak of monstrous traffic jams.
“We will be helping in traffic direction and control. This is also part of pro-active measures against all types of crimes that may be committed on EDSA,” said Cruz.
Cruz said that at least 170 HPG personnel, 20 mobile cars, and 36 HPG motorcycles have been assigned on EDSA.
The deployment of HPG policemen on EDSA was done in the past administration and was proven effective in compelling motorists to follow traffic rules. This resulted in the decrease of travel time by a few minutes.
But policemen manning EDSA were pulled out and were tasked to run after car thieves and other vehicle-related crimes.
Cruz said the return of HPG on EDSA is part of the mandate of the unit to be present in major thoroughfares not only in Meteo Manila but also in the provinces. (Aaron Recuenco)
