The Department of Justice yesterday revealed it has no plans to turn self-confessed gunman Edgardo Luib into a state witness in the killing of businessman Dominic Sytin.
Senior State Prosecutor Juan Pedro Navera said that Luib has already pleaded guilty for his crime during arraignment proceedings yesterday before the Olongapo City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 72.
“His plea of guilty helps the prosecution evidence against the other accused,” Navera said.
Despite this, Navera, who leads the prosecution of the case, said Luib will not be turned into a state witness.
“We are not considering that,” the prosecutor said.
Luib is facing murder and frustrated murder charges along with Dominic’s brother Dennis and Ryan Rementilla.
Both Dennis and Rementilla are at large.
The case concerns the shooting incident which took place on Nov. 28, 2018 in front of the Light House Hotel inside the Subic Bay Freeport Zone and resulted in the killing of Dominic and the wounding of his bodyguard Efren Espartero Jr.
In a DoJ resolution which declared that probable cause was found in indicting the three accused, state prosecutors relied on the testimony of Luib who is also the childhood friend of Rementilla. (Jeffrey Damicog)
