PUERTO PRINCESA, Palawan – Magvrylle Matchino completed a golden treble on Thursday and finished with four gold medals in the 2019 Batang Pinoy National Championships Thursday at the Ramon V. Mitra Sports Complex here.
Matchino and her teammates Janine Dauba, Evita Ruth Belloso and Kyla Elona clocked 52.4 seconds to beat a field that included teams from Bacolod City (52.6sec) and Negros Occidental (53.2sec) in the girls 4×100 meters.
The 14-year-old Matchino followed it up with a golden victory in the girls 2000m steeplechase with a time of 7:38.8, edging Pangasinan’s Ana Marie Eugenio (8:08.7) and Joyce Satia of Negros Occidental (8:20.9).
Matchino capped her glorious day by leading the same team to victory in the
4x400m with a time of 4:17.30
Matchino’s first gold came Tuesday after topping the girls 1500m. She also settled for two silvers in the 800m and the 4x400m relay with the same 4x100m teammates.
IGOT CONTINUED TO SHINE
Later in the afternoon, Cebuano bet Aldrener Igot Jr. clinched his sixth gold medal in archery after beating Puerto Princesa’s Nathaniel Carlos, 6-2, in the cub boys’ Olympic round event.
Igot, a 14-year-old native of Pasil, swept all the distance events – 20m, 30m, 40m, 50m and FITA in the first two days and will have a chance to become the most bemedalled athlete as he is slated to compete in the boys’ team and mixed team events on Friday.
Baguio City, meanwhile, showed its dominance in judo after clinching three gold medals courtesy of Leerenz Tindaan in the -50kgs class, Aoen Lance Kim in the -55kgs, and Wright Lonogan in the -60kgs.
Tindaan bested Quezon City’s John Patrick De Tomas in the finals, Kim edged teammate Marco Paul Sotero, and Lonogan defeated Cainta, Rizal’s Kristoffer Dugan.
At the San Jose covered court, Zamboanga City bagged five gold medals to underscore its weightlifting dominance.
Christian Rodriguez prevailed in the boys 13-15 division after triumphing in the 49kg clean and jerk (78 kilos) and the total (138 kilos) while Rose Jean Ramos dominated the girls 45kgs after sweeping the snatch (62 kilos), clean and jerk (70 kilos) and total (132 kilos).
In cycling, Pangasinan’s Ruben Dela Cruz, Athena Magpantay of Sara, Iloilo and Parañaque City’s Lwahna Montanes topped their divisions in the cross-country mountainbike.
Dela Cruz timed 7 minutes and 21.8 seconds to win the 11-under class, Magpantay clocked 27:13.9 to win the 12-13 year-old category, and Montanes posted 37:15.3 to win the 14-15 year-old division.
In sepak takraw, the team of Rose Ann Alila, Kristine Brigino and Rea Lawan of Sta. Maria, Bulacan won the girls regu event to share the limelight with Rey Pueblo, John Carl Huessa, Franz Matapuego, Fritz Pastrana and Shermon Lee of Mina, Iloilo in the boys regu team event.
As of 12 noon on Thursday, Cotabato City currently leads the overall medal standings with 14 gold medals – all coming from swimming which ended on Wednesday.
Accounting for Cotabato’s gold medals were John Alexander Talosig with five, Isidore Warain with four, Saira Janelle Pabellon with three and one from Jie Alexandria Talosig. (Kristel Satumbaga)
