The two low-pressure areas near the country yesterday developed into tropical depressions “Kabayan” and “Liwayway.”
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration said Kabayan intensified into a tropical depression at about 3 a.m. yesterday.
However, Kabayan left the Philippine Area of Responsibility before noon yesterday. It was estimated 390 kilometers west-northwest of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, and moving west at 25 kilometers per hour.
While outside the PAR, Kabayan is forecast to intensify into a tropical storm while moving west towards southern China. It has maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph.
PAGASA weather specialist Meno Mendoza said Kabayan may continue to enhance the southwest monsoon or “habagat” and bring cloudy skies with scattered monsoon rain showers and thunderstorms over Metro Manila, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Negros Occidental, Guimaras, Iloilo, Capiz, Antique, Aklan, Zambales, and Bataan.
Liwayway developed into a tropical depression at around 8 a.m. yesterday.
PAGASA estimated the location of Liwayway at 405 kms east-northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur or 510 kms east of Maasin City, Southern Leyte before noon yesterday. It has maximum sustained winds of 45 kph and gustiness of up to 55 kph and moving northwest at 20 kph.
The trough or advancing clouds of Liwayway may bring scattered light to moderate rains with at times heavy rain showers over Caraga and Davao region. Residents in these areas, especially those living in areas identified to be highly or very highly susceptible to floods and rain-induced landslides, should take extra precaution. (Ellalyn Ruiz)
