The Philippine Azkals produced their first win in the second round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup/2023 AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers after beating Guam, 4-1, Tuesday at the National Training Center in Dededo.
Angel Guirado and Patrick Reichelt scored the first two goals in the first 12 minutes before Stephan Schrock
and Patrick Strauss found the back of the net in the second half to give the Azkals the full three points on the road.
With the victory, the Azkals extended their mastery on Guam booters to four games while bouncing back from a 5-2 defeat to Syria last Thursday at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City.
They also leveled Syria and Maldives with three points apiece in Group A.
The next international window is in October when the Azkals host China in Bacolod City.
Guirado put the Azkals on the board seven minutes after the opening kickoff. It was the 34-year-old striker’s 10th international goal and first since Dec. 2017.
Reichelt scored next five minutes later to make it 2-0 for the Azkals, a scoreline that stood until the 67th minute when Marcus Lopez scored a spot kick.
Guam was awarded a penalty after Azkals defender Carli de Murga pushed Travis Nicklaw inside the box.
But Schrock answered in the 71st to restore the Azkals’ two-goal advantage while Strauss added a fourth goal, 11 minutes later. (Jonas Terrado)
