Small town lottery operators who fail to timely and fully remit government shares to the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office could be slapped with estafa charges, President Duterte warned last Tuesday.
Government officials who may be in cahoots with delinquent STL operators might also be charged with malversation of public funds, according to the President.
The President issued the warning several days after he lifted the suspension order on the STL operations supervised by the State-run charity agency provided certain conditions are met.
“’Yung hindi nakabayad may kaso. Utang ‘yan. And if that is a – if that is part of what you ought to be remitting to PCSO, the crime I think there is estafa. Kasi pera na ng gobyerno mo ‘yan, bakit hindi mo ibinigay?” Duterte said during a Palace press briefing.
“Malversation if you are a government employee,” he added.
Apart from facing estafa raps, the President the government would take back the permits of STL operators and forfeit their three-month cash bond if they fail to remit their receipts to the PCSO.
“‘Pagka pumalpak ka ng isang beses, kunin ko na ‘yang franchise mo including the P2 million that you have deposited with us because that would form part of the penalty,” he said.
He cautioned STL operators not to dupe the government, saying he could not care less if they were “warlords.” (Genalyn Kabiling)
