CEBU CITY – Hogs from Luzon are banned from entering Cebu in the next 100 days.
Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia imposed the ban two days after the Department of Agriculture confirmed cases of African Swine Fever in Rizal and Bulacan.
The imposition of the 100-day ban on hogs from Luzon stemmed from the appeal of hog raisers in Cebu during a meeting presided over by Garcia last Tuesday.
Garcia said she granted the appeal to protect Cebu’s P10.9-billion hog industry.
“We tried to weigh all considerations. First and foremost is to protect our swine industry in Cebu. Live hogs are in the best position to transmit if they are infected with the virus that is why we are immediately banning all live hogs coming from Luzon,” Garcia said.
Garcia clarified she is not banning pork products from other provinces to ensure that the pork demand in the province is still met.
She will convene the Local Price Coordinating Council due to reports that the prices of meat products in the market have slightly increased. (Calvin D. Cordova)
