At least 60 families lost their homes in a fire in a residential area yesterday in Barangay Old Capitol Site, Quezon City.
Bureau of Fire Protection-Quezon City chief Jaime Ramirez said the fire broke out on the second floor of a house owned by certain Elmer Jimenez at the corner of Masaya and Matiwasay Streets around 4:07 a.m.
Ramirez said a lighted candle left inside a room caused the blaze.
The fire reached first alarm at 4:07 a.m. and raised to second alarm at 4:21 a.m.
The blaze spread quickly as adjacent houses were made of light materials. Firefighters had difficulty entering the area due to narrow streets.
Arson probers said around 30 houses were destroyed in the fire that lasted for more than an hour before it was put out at 5:31 a.m.
Nobody was killed or injured but estimated damage to properties from the fire was pegged at P150,000. (Alexandria San Juan)
