Tropical depression “Marilyn” has slightly weakened but the southwest monsoon or “habagat” may bring rains over parts of the country in the coming days.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration estimated the location of Marilyn at 1,215 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes before noon yesterday.
It has slightly weakened with maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 55 kph.
Marilyn still has no direct effect over the country and remains less likely to make landfall but the habagat will bring occasional to frequent light to moderate with intermittent heavy rains over Western Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Sulu archipelago, Palawan, Oriental Mindoro, and Occidental Mindoro.
Scattered light to moderate rains with at times heavy rain showers due to thunderstorms will be experienced over Marinduque, Romblon, Bicol, and the rest of Visayas.
PAGASA advised residents in these areas, especially those living in areas identified to be highly or very highly susceptible to floods and rain-induced landslides, to take extra precaution.
Metro Manila and the rest of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.
PAGASA weather specialist Meno Mendoza said sea travel remains risky, especially for small sea craft, over the western seaboard of Southern Luzon and the seaboards of Visayas and Mindanao due to potentially rough sea conditions. (Ellalyn Ruiz)
