CEBU CITY – A 49-year-old businessman was gunned down a few meters from a police station here last Sunday.
Jeffrey Sanchez Gomonit was driving a Mitsubishi Montero Sport when he was shot around 9 p.m. in front of a popular mall on Pope John Paul Ave.
Police said the victim stopped for traffic when two men in a motorcycle arrived.
The backrider got off the motorcycle and repeatedly shot the victim at close range.
The assailants, who wore full-faced helmets, drove off after the attack, which happened a few meters from the Mabolo police station. It was the same area where Police Capt. Delfin Bontuyan was killed by motorcycle-riding gunmen last May.
At least three spent shells for a still undetermined firearm were recovered in the crime scene.
The victim suffered multiple bullet wounds in the body.
Police Major Dexter Basergo, chief of the Mabolo police, said the attack may have been carried out by hired killers.
The motive of the killing could be business-related, Basirgo said.
“We already have a person of interest. He is a former business partner of the victim. Based on the text message that we found in his cell phone, he was set up and his movement was monitored,” said Basirgo.
Gomonit owned a business firm that hauls minerals extracted from construction sites.
Police said the victim came from a meeting and was on his way to pick up his family in an uptown mall when he was attacked.
The victim was a native of Zambianga del Sur and temporarily resided in Mandaue City. (Calvin Cordova)
