A traffic enforcer, who was running after a traffic violator, was shot dead by two motorcycle-riding men yesterday morning in Pasay City.
Police identified the victim as Joey de Chavez, a member of the Pasay City Traffic and Parking Bureau. He died on the spot from several gunshot wounds in the body.
Investigation showed the incident happened in front of High Lands Coffee at Double Dragon Plaza, EDSA Extension, Pasay City.
Police said the prior to the shooting incident, the victim was manning traffic at EDSA Extension when he accosted a sports utility vehicle (SUV) due to a traffic violation.
The driver of the SUV instead sped off, prompting the victim to board his motorcycle and run after the said vehicle.
However, two men riding a motorycle blocked De Chaves and the back rider shot him repeatedly, causing him to fall from his motorcycle.
Joey Andres, a fellow traffic enforcer, described De Chavez as a good friend and a family man.
“Nagkita pa kami kaninang umaga nang mag-report siya sa opisina,” said Andres. “Wala naman po kaming napapag-usapan tungkol sa death threats. Normal naman po sa trabaho namin ang alitan laban sa mga motorist.”
Andres said the victim, who resided in Cavite, left a wife and four children.
Police are conducting investigation to determine whether the motorcycle riders were back-up of the SUV that violated traffic regulations. (Jean Fernando)
