Carlos Yulo and boxer Nesthy Petecio stand to receive P1 million each as cash incentives from the government following their world championship feats over the weekend.
Philippine Sports Commission chairman Butch Ramirez announced this yesterday after Yulo became the first Filipino to win a gold medal at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany on Saturday while Petecio became the second Filipino to win in the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Ulan-Ude, Russia on Sunday.
Under Republic Act 10699 known as the “Expanded Incentives Act”, gold medalists will receive P500,000 for “qualifying competitions for world-level games” and P1 million for “world-level competitions held at least every two years with at least 45 countries participating.”
In Yulo’s case, he will get P500,000 for his golden performance in floor exercise of the annual world tournament.
Petecio, for her part, will pocket P1 million after capturing the featherweight gold in the biennial world event she had participated.
Ramirez, however, said additional P500,000 will be given to Yulo for setting the historic mark based from the PSC Board Resolution.
“They deserved these,” he said.
Another boxer, Eumir Marcial, is also stand to receive P500,000 for his silver-medal feat in last month’s 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships in Yekaterinburg, Russia also based from the Incentives Act.
The PSC will also give P250,000 reward to pole vaulter EJ Obiena for qualifying to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics by hitting the qualifying standard.
“Ibinubuhos na namin ang suporta sa atleta. We’re embracing the signs and evolution of Philippine sports,” Ramirez said. (Kristel Satumbaga)
