Bureau of Immigration (BI) agents have arrested a Korean teacher wanted by authorities in Seoul for swindling two compatriots of more than 100 million won, or roughly US$85,000.
BI fugitive search unit chief Bobby Raquepo said 49-year-old Kim Sang Wook was arrested in Malvar Street, Malate, Manila last Tuesday.
BI Commissioner Jaime Morente issued the arrest warrant against the alien upon the request of the Korean embassy in Manila.
Raquepo said that a Korean court had issued an arrest warrant against Kim who is a teacher forĀ defrauding his victims six times by promising their children teaching jobs.
Investigations revealed that Kim fled to Manila in February 2015 as tourist visa and has not left the country since then.
Raquepo said the Korean will be deported shortly.
Meanwhile, Morente lauded the improvements made at the BI Warden Facility (BIWF)
Warden chief Remiecar Caguiron said BIWF has undergone changes under her administration.
She said personnel were required to attendĀ seminars on jail management and human rights and the facilities renovated.
Caguiron said the BIWF is not a jail, but a detention center where erring foreigners are temporarily housed pending their deportation.
Some 200 foreign nationals are currently detained awaiting deportation.
The management is looking at the possibility of setting up another bigger detention center somewhere in Northern Luzon to make the stay of detainees more comfortable. (Jun Ramirez)
