The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) has subjected 16 policemen acting as prison guards at the New Bilibid Prisons (NBP) to investigation after they were accused of smuggling contraband for inmates.
NCRPO chief Brig. Gen. Debold Sinas said the items prohibited in the NBP include liquor, electronic gadgets and tobacco products.
“They were ordered to submit their respective counter-affidavit until Wednesday of this week to shed light on the issue at hand,” said Sinas.
He, however, refused to identify the 16 cops.
The NCRPO has earlier deployed more than 500 policemen at the NBP based on the request of Bureau of Corrections Director General Gerald Bantag while all prison guards at the Bilibid are being subjected to strict vetting process.
The vetting process is aimed at identifying prison guards who can be trusted to resume their duty amid allegations of massive corruption at the BuCor.
Sinas said the 16 cops were already subjected to restricted custody.
The cops are from district and Regional Mobile Force Company of NCRPO, part of the 551 policemen fielded by the NCRPO to secure the premises of NBP’s Maximum Security Compound.
Based on the report, the 16 policemen were caught bringing in liquor, electronic gadgets and tobacco products during inspection and frisking.
It is not immediately known if the seized items are for inmates or for personal consumption of the policemen. (Aaron Recuenco)
