Taguig City ranked first among local government units in the National Capital Region in the implementation of the Department of Health’s “Sabayang Patak Kontra Polio” campaign.
On the 11th day of the 14-day program, Taguig received a rating of 102 percent, the highest score among the cities and municipality in NCR, and as successfully vaccinated a total number of 96,866 children.
These results were validated by teams from the DoH and the World Health Organization, which conducted Rapid Coverage Assessment.
Following announcements of a polio outbreak in the country last Sept. 19, Taguig amplified its campaign against the disease by administering vaccinations in barangay health centers and conducting house-to-house visits, in compliance with DoH Memorandum No. 2019-0318 reiterating the conduct in the NCR of the SPV campaign from Oct. 14 to 27 and Nov. 25 to Dec. 7.
Under the program, children aged zero to 59 months old should receive oral poliomyelitis or polio vaccination to help them fight the virus that may lead to lifetime paralysis and even death.
DoH Health Policy and Systems Development Undersecretary Mario Villaverde thanked Taguig for vigorously implementing the program.
In response, Taguig National Immunization Program Coordinator Dr. Jennifer Lou Lorico-de Guzman said the rating transcended numbers and actually meant a stronger initial protection against the polio virus.
