ASF (African Swine Flu) and earthquakes, needles, blood and germs – just some of the things that make people afraid. Loss of loved ones, failure in exams and business ventures also scare many individuals. Some people fear the mere sight of doctors and dentists.
Parents feel a certain type of fear when they cannot contact their children. Many patients and their relatives are afraid due to existing medical conditions and the recommended procedures. There are young and old people who fear being left alone and crossing the street by themselves. Every person has fears. The only difference is how he/she tries to overcome them.
Fears can be beneficial to a certain extent. They help people take precautions and address the cause. However, there are times when a person’s fears are either baseless or overpowering.
Do you know someone whose fears are overwhelming? Are you often fearful? Watch out! People who are not able to overcome their fears suffer from gastro-intestinal problems, headaches, palpitations, difficulty in breathing and sleeplessness. Their daily activities are also badly affected because they lack focus. Their productivity level decreases.
Don’t feed your fears. Overcome them!
Pray about whatever it is that scares you. God is bigger than that. Remember Isaiah 41:10.
“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you.
Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you.
I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.”
Talk to someone about your fear. Don’t carry the whole world on your shoulders. A few words of advice from a friend or relative can be a source of strength and encouragement.
Do what you can to alleviate your fears. Do you need to change something – your diet perhaps, your behavior, or the way you look at the situation? Do you need more trainings on a subject?
Stop thinking about all your problems at once, or you will be overwhelmed. Never think of your concerns as insurmountable. When you remember something that makes you feel afraid, think of something that will evoke hope and happiness.
Sing. Whistle a happy tune (“The King and I”). You will be surprised at the calming effect of music to your mind and body.
Aja!
