Some areas in the western section of Luzon and Visayas may continue to experience rains due to the trough or extension of tropical storm “Quiel” (international name “Nakri”) and tail-end of cold front today.
Before noon yesterday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration estimated the location of Quiel at 465 kilometers west-southwest of Subic, Zambales or 465 kms west-northwest of Coron, Palawan.
It has intensified from a tropical depression into a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 90 kph.
Aside from Quiel, the tail-end of cold front, which is the boundary between warm and cold air masses, prevailing over Northern Luzon, will also bring rains over some portions of Luzon.
PAGASA said Quiel and the tail-end of cold front may continue to bring light to moderate rains to at times heavy rains in Babuyan Islands, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Occidental Mindoro, Antique, and Cuyo and Kalayaan Islands.
Light to moderate rains with intermittent heavy rains may affect Batanes, Apayao, Ilocos Norte, Aklan, Iloilo, Oriental Mindoro, Calamian Islands, and the rest of Cagayan.
Residents in areas affected by Quiel and the tail-end of cold front, particularly those in areas identified to be “highly” or “very highly” susceptible to floods and rain-induced landslides, should remain alert and take necessary precautionary measures.
Sea travel is also still risky, especially for small sea vessels, in the northern and western coasts of Luzon due to potentially rough sea conditions. (Ellalyn Ruiz)
