TACLOBAN CITY – A detained son of a former town mayor was shot and wounded when he tried to grab the gun of a prison guard inside the Samar Provincial Jail in Catbalogan City Thursday.
Francis Grey, son of former mayor Joseph Grey of San Jorge, Samar, sustained a bullet wound in the abdomen and was brought to the Samar Provincial Hospital.
Grey was arrested in Imus City, Cavite last year after he was charged with murder over the killing of a village chairman in San Jorge.
Initial investigation showed that at around 8:10 a.m., prison guard Angelo Figueroa was about to take charge of the tower guard station of the Samar Provincial Jail when Grey attempted to grab his firearm tucked in his waist.
During their scuffle, Figueroa managed to draw his gun and shoot Grey twice.
Figueroa was taken to the Catbalogan City Police Station for documentation and proper disposition.
Grey was previously placed under the custody of the Calbayog City District Jail but he filed a request for transfer to the Samar Provincial Jail for his safety.
During his arrest, he implicated several political personalities in the first district of Samar in killings and illegal drugs trade in the province. (Marie Tonette Marticio)
