DAVAO CITY – The choice of the organizers to play “Manila,” a popular song by Filipino band “Hotdog,” during the opening ceremony of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan on Saturday did not sit well with Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte who felt that the music did not represent the entire country.
In an Instagram post yesterday, the presidential daughter said that the organizers should have been more inclusive in their choice of music to encourage the country to cheer for Filipino athletes.
Expressing her dismay, Duterte asked: “Di po ba Philippine flag ang dala? Why would you play song Manila? Did Lapu-Lapu die for Manila?”
The feisty mayor said the organizers should have not made the excuse that it was an “upbeat, danceable song” when they have other options like the “budots,” a popular street dance music, from Mindanao.
“’Wag po natin gawing excuse ang upbeat danceable song. Kami nagimbento ng budots. Kaloko man oie,” she said.
Duterte said she is a Filipino but she does not have any drop of Tagalog blood.
“Yes, nega ako, bakit? I am Filipino but I don’t have one drop of Tagalog blood in me. Pure Vismin by birth and Ilocano by marriage. #bastabisayahilas,” she said. (Antonio Colina IV)
