The Department of Health has urged the public to protect themselves against influenza or flu as it is a common disease during the cold months.
Health Undersecretary Rolando Enrique Domingo said that the flu season usually starts from the month of October until February.
“So mag-iingat lamang po lalo na ‘yung matatanda at pag meron may sakit sa pamilya, mag-mask,” said Domingo.
The DoH said that some of the symptoms of flu are fever, cough, headache, muscle and joint pain, sore throat, and runny nose.
“Flu can spread through the entry of influenza virus into the respiratory tract from tiny droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes,” it said.
Domingo said that flu can be prevented by practicing good personal hygiene.
To avoid contracting the flu, the DoH said that the public should make it a habit to regularly wash their hands and dry it afterwards. They should also cover their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, use a tissue, and dispose of it properly.
“Avoid close contact with sick people and avoid touching one’s eyes, nose, or mouth,” it added.
It also advised the public to have adequate rest at home, increase their intake of fluids such as water or juice, and eat nutritious food.
The DoH said that it is also important to seek early medical consultation if they see signs of flu. (Analou de Vera)
