SAMAHANG Basketbol ng Pilipinas yesterday announced the appointment of former PBA star Ronnie Magsanoc as head coach of Gilas Pilipinas 3×3 men’s team to the FIBA 3×3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The 3×3 OQT will be held in New Delhi, India on March 18-22 where the country is grouped in Pool C with Slovenia, France, Qatar and Dominican Republic.
Magsanoc handled the 3×3 men’s team to the recently concluded Southeast Asian Games where PBA players Chris Newsome, Jason Perkins, Mo Tautuaa and CJ Perez successfully won the gold medal for the country.
He also previously coached 3×3 teams to the 2018 FIBA 3×3 World Cup in the Philippines, the 2018 FIBA 3×3 Challenger in Shanghai and the 2018 FIBA 3×3 U23 World Cup in Xi An, China.
FIBA 3×3 OQT in India will be composed of teams from 20 countries divided into four (4) Pools of five (5) teams each.
Each Pool will play a single round robin with the top two (2) teams moving to the Quarterfinals.
Knockout games will be played in the Quarterfinals and Semifinals to determine the OQT Finalists. The top three (3) teams of the OQT will qualify to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
