ZAMBOANGA CITY – A fire of still undetermined origin razed hundreds of houses made of light materials in at least four densely populated villages in downtown Jolo, Sulu province, Monday morning.
Sulu Governor Abdusakur Tan said the fire started at 10 a.m. from a house located in Barangay Takut-Takut and rapidly spread to the adjacent villages in the town proper of Jolo.
Tan said the fire gutted the houses in Barangays Chinese pier, Tulay, Zone 1, Zone 2, Zone 3, and Zone 4.
The governor said that hundreds of his constituents were displaced as a result of the fire.
As of press time, the fire was still raging towards the direction of the local wharf in the town proper.
Tan said he already ordered his Provincial Social Welfare and Development (PSWD) to immediately extend assistance to the affected families once the firemen put out the fire.
“These are poor people living in that villages and now they will be displaced as a result of the fire,” Tan said.
The provincial government he said will extend all possible assistance to the affected families of the fire incident. (Nonoy Lacson)
