A retired police officer, who allegedly engaged in “video karera” operation, an illegal betting game, was nabbed by the Philippine National Police (PNP) after he tried to bribe an official of the Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group (PNP-IMEG) in Camp Crame, Quezon City, the service unit disclosed Friday.
Police Captain Mae Ann Cunanan, spokesperson of the PNP-IMEG, identified the suspect as retired Executive Master Sergeant Brigido Capio-an, whose last assignment was at the Quezon City Police District’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (QCPD-CIDU).
According to Cunanan, Capio-an offered P10,000 to an unnamed team leader of the anti-scalawag unit when they met in a cafe inside the police camp around 5 p.m. on Thursday.
Cunanan said the suspect asked for protection on his illegal business after the former received a tip that his video karera haven in Quezon City will be the subject of a raid by the IMEG.
Unknown to Capio-an, a plan was already hatched by the IMEG to catch him in the act of bribery.
When Capio-an handed the money to the IMEG team leader, undercover agents revealed themselves and arrested the suspect, Cunanan said.
The IMEG seized the bribe money and the suspect’s cellphone which will be subjected to technical investigation. This is to determine if other active or former police officials are involved in Capio-an’s illegal activities, Cunanan noted.
Capio-an was placed under the custody of the IMEG in Camp Crame while charges for violation of Article 212 of the Revised Penal Code or Corruption of a Public Official was set for filing against him. (Martin A. Sadongdong)
