Two persons were killed while 19 others were injured when their passenger jeepney slammed into an illegally parked dump truck on Marcos Highway in Pasig City Wednesday.
Police identified the fatalities as Jenny Ann Colinares Clarino, 21, student; and Joseph Andaya Amor, 45, who were seated in front of the jeepney.
The jeepney driver, Jay-R Labitag, 28, and 18 of his passengers sustained injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals.
A report reaching Eastern Police District said the accident happened at around 11:25 a.m. on the westbound lane of Marcos Highway in front of a shopping mall.
Pasig police chief Police Col. Moises Villaceran Jr. said the jeepney was racing with another passenger jeepney to get passengers when it rammed into an illegally parked dump truck driven by Crisanto Salvador Fajanilla, 40.
“Accordingly, the dump truck was illegally parked along the westbound lane of Marcos Highway, and it had no early warning devices placed on its sides,” Villaceran said.
Clarino was declared dead on arrival at Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center in Marikina City while Amor died while undergoing treatment at Pasig City General Hospital.
Police said charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide, multiple physical injuries, and damage to property will be filed against Labitag.
Villaceran said that Fajanilla will be probed to determine his accountability in the fatal road mishap. (Jhon Casinas)
