For Bagong Henerasyon (BH) Party-List Rep. Bernadette Herrera, journalists and other media practitioners also deserve the “frontliner” tag, which has become a badge of honor in the persisting COVID-19 pandemic.
In a statement Sunday, Herrera hailed the media for keeping the public informed on the latest developments about the crisis while risking their lives in the process.
“Just like the doctors and nurses on the front lines of this global pandemic, these dedicated members of the media are also taking part as front-liners working round the clock to bring vital information about COVID-19,” Herrera said.
The Deputy Majority Leader added: “Despite knowing that their lives are in danger, they nevertheless perform their duties diligently and inform the world of the situation. We have nothing but respect and admiration to the members of the media.”
Dozens of journalists around the world have fallen prey to COVID-19, Herrera noted.
CNN achor Chris Cuomo had tested positive for COVID-19, while 54-year-old CBS journalist Maria Mercader died of the virus last March 29.
In the Philippines, radio DZMM suspended its regular programming after its employees were exposed to persons under investigation (PUI) for COVID-19.
Earlier, CNN Philippines temporarily stopped broadcasting after a coronavirus case was confirmed in the building where the TV station was based. It, however, continued to provide news through its websites and social media accounts while its offices are being disinfected.
In the era of misinformation and fake news, Herrera pointed out that the ever-reliable media plays a crucial role in providing the public with verified information about COVID-19.
“The role of our quad-media in spreading reliable news and information in this time of crisis cannot be overstated,” said the lady lawmaker, who served as chair of the House Committee on Public Information in the previous 17th Congress. (Ellson A. Quismorio)
