Salvador “Buddy” Andrada, the longest-serving president of Philippine Tennis Association (Philta), passed away Wednesday morning due to cardiac arrest. He was 83.
Andrada, who served as tennis chief from 1986 to 2005, was also a former Philippine Sports Commissioner.
To help boost the sport’s grassroots program, he launched the Andrada Cup to cater to the country’s promising age-group standouts. The event lasted for 30 years as the association fell victim to leadership crisis.
Andrada was the first Filipino to serve as president of the Asian Tennis Federation, which was founded in Manila in 1964. (Kristel Satumbaga)
