No jobs and livelihood fairs will be held on May 1, Labor Day.
Department of Labor and Employment Assistant Secretary Dominique Rubia-Tutay said no such activities will be held due to the enhanced community quarantine as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Activities with large gathering of people are prohibited under the ECQ.
“We cannot hold job fairs during the extended ECQ…So we won’t be having job fairs on May 1,” Tutay said. “We will activate our employment facilitation program when businesses start to recover,” added Tutay.
DoLE traditionally holds job fairs during Labor Day in which thousands of jobs, local and overseas, are made available to jobseekers.
Tutay said this year’s Labor Day celebration is going to be very “simple.”
“It would be a very simple event for now, now that the situation is not yet normal,” she said.
Tutay said that they are focused in assisting displaced workers. “For now, our focus is mostly on social protection and welfare,” she said.
President Duterte has extended the ECQ in the National Capital Region and other high-risk areas until May 15 to prevent the spread of the COVID-19. Other areas have been placed under general community quarantine starting May 1. (Leslie Aquino)
