Wushu is pretty much done for 2020.
With the world struggling to contain the coronavirus pandemic, Wushu Federation of the Philippines (WFP) secretary-general Julian Camacho said on Monday that their athletes have been informed about the dreadful news.
“We have been told that all the tournaments scheduled for the rest ofthe year will be rescheduled in 2021,” said Camacho.
As to exactly when, Camacho could not provide any assurance that activity will be staged in the first quarter of 2021.
“Nobody knows when this is going to end but as far as wushu is concerned, our sport, we’re done for 2020,” he said.
The WFP has on its roster over 20 national team members who opted to return to the provinces just before the lockdown was imposed by the government.
“There were a few like Agatha Wong who are in Metro Manila,” said Camacho. “But the majority are outside and are just awaiting when they are going to be called back to train.”
Once travel restrictions are lifted, Camacho said those who left will be informed to return the soonest to resume training.
“They have to train and stay in shape even if no tournament that’s going to take place in the coming months,” he added.
Among the events that were ordered postponed include the world juniors and the Asian championships.
“You simply can’t do anything about this,” said Camacho, whose wushu artists bagged seven out of 16 gold medals during the 30th Southeast Asian Games last year.
Wong accounted for two gold medals ‒ both in taolu ‒ in a spellbinding display of style and form.
