Instead of the usual July start, the NCAA, the country’s oldest collegiate league, is likely to kick off its 96th season in November.
This came after President Rodrigo Duterte approved the endorsement of the government task force on COVID-19 to move the start of classes for school year 2020-2021 to September.
Arellano University’s Peter Cayco, currently the NCAA Management Committee (MANCOM) chairman, said Tuesday the group discussed all important matters with regards to next season which will be hosted by Letran.
Though he revealed that the opening will be pushed back, Cayco declined to further discuss the details, emphasizing that whatever they agreed upon will be forwarded to the Policy Board for final decision.
The previous 95th NCAA Season started with basketball competitions last July 7 with Arellano University as host.
Aside from basketball which was topped by Letran, also part of the first semester calendar are swimming, taekwondo, table tennis and chess.
Last March 19, the league announced the termination of the season due to the coronavirus pandemic, which forced the government to put Metro Manila under Enhanced Community Quarantine.
Events that failed to resume after being postponed were men’s, women’s and high school volleyball, junior’s and men’s football, and lawn tennis.
It also led to the cancellation of soft tennis, track and field, beach volleyball, 15-under basketball and cheer leading competition.
