TACLOBAN City – A former soldier was shot dead by police after he went into a shooting rampage that left six people dead and two others wounded in Calbayog City on Tuesday.
Police identified the slain former military man as Glenn Balonan, who was reportedly drunk when he ran amuck in Barangay Gadgaran.
Initial investigation showed that Balonan indiscriminately fired his gun at his neighbors and bystanders.
Killed during the rampage were Carlo Saldania, 28; Gary Saldania, 34; Jimmy Jadulco, 45; and Jalita Ramada, all residents of Brgy. Gadgaran; Vicente Lozano, 66, a motorcab driver of Brgy. Capoocan; and Leopoldo Galo, 64, of Brgy. San Policarpo.
Two other victims — Humphrey Tacaldo, 54, a local government employee; and Janine Bareto, a sales lady — were critically wounded and are now under observation in a hospital in the city.
The suspect was later killed when he fought it out with responding Calbayog policemen led by Lt. Col. Neil Montano, and members of the Regional Mobile Force Battalion and 1st Samar Mobile Force Company.
Police are conducting a follow-up investigation. (Marie Tonette Marticio)
