ILOILO CITY — For more than 25 days, the Department of Health (DoH) has not recorded any more casualty from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Western Visayas region while the death toll remains at 10.
“Let us hope the number will remain the same and there will be no additional deaths,” said Dr. Renilyn Reyes, DoH’s regional chief for Public Health Programs.
From the total of 111 confirmed cases of COVID-19, Reyes said the last casualty of Western Visayas was recorded last May 3.
The 40 year-old man from Bacolod City died due to “cardiogenic shock secondary to fatal arrhythmia” despite having been initially listed as a COVID-19 recovery.
Of all the areas in Western Visayas, Iloilo province had the most number of COVID-19 deaths with four.
There were three COVID-19 deaths recorded in Bacolod City, two in Capiz province and one in Iloilo City.
Based on DoH’s record, majority of COVID-19 deaths in Western Visayas were elderly who already had pre-existing health conditions prior to getting infected.
The oldest casualty was a 94-year-old veteran from Miag-ao town, Iloilo province.
While there are 111 cases of COVID-19 in Western Visayas, Reyes said that only 23 are active cases as 78 people have recovered.
Reyes also pointed out that majority of new cases recorded for the past four weeks were repatriated overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and not from local transmission. (Tara Yap)
