A security guard was arrested after he held a lady doctor hostage at the East Avenue Medical Center on Wednesday morning, police said.
The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) identified the suspect as Hilarion Achondo, 51.
According to a police report, Achondo was undergoing treatment at the emergency room of the hospital due to injuries he sustained from a motorcycle accident when he took a syringe and aimed it at 29-year-old female doctor Russell Carandang, who was then attending to several patients, around 5:50 a.m.
Achondo allegedly tried to inject the syringe into the doctor’s neck, which prompted several police officers in the facility to calm him down.
“Sensing immediate danger to the victim, Staff Sergeant Bienvenido Ribaya III introduced himself as police officer and tried to calm down the suspect, but the latter did not make any demand or complaint,” the police report read.
Maj. Elmer Monsalve, head of QCPD’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit, said in an interview over DZMM that during the incident, the victim was even tapping the suspect and telling him that she would help him.
The suspect eventually released the doctor and threw off the syringe, leading to Achondo’s arrest, according to police.
Monsalve said they would file grave coercion and alarm and scandal charges against the suspect who is already under his office’s custody.
He added that they would also look for any possible Bayanihan To Heal as One Law violation committed by the suspect. (Joseph Pedrajas)
